Our Delicious Root Beer Shot Drink Recipe

This Root Beer Shooter recipe is an easy drink to make and definitely brings back memories of A&W root beer.

I always loved root beer as a kid growing up. Maybe it was a foreshadowing of my bartending days or all the time I’ve spent sitting at a bar. But this shot definitely brings back some memories of pounding back bottles of the stuff. So if you’re looking for a shot that tastes like root beer, this is the one!

Made with coffee liqueur, cola and Galliano, this three ingredient drink really does taste like root beer. And it’s super easy to make with equal parts of each liquor. It’s more about having all of these on hand. But if you don’t, it’s worth collecting them all and making these if you love root beer as much as I do.

How To Make a Root Beer Shot?

You’re going to need a shaker and strainer for this shot. And of course a shot glass. The measurements for each of the three liquors depends on the shot glass size you’re using.

For a 1 ounce shot glass, use 1/3 ounce of each. For a 1 1/2 ounce shot glass use a half ounce in each.

Fill your shaker with a large handful of ice from your ice maker for home bar. Pour each of the three ingredients, the coffee liqueur, cola and Galliano into the shaker.

Shake for a few seconds.

Place the strainer on the top of your shaker and strain the ingredients into your shot glass.

That’s it. There’s no garnish or anything fancy you need to do. Slam the shot or serve if you’re working!

Root Beer Shooter Ingredients

  • 1 Part Coffee Liqueur
  • 1 Part Cola
  • 1 Part Galliano

About the Ingredients

Coffee Liqueur – The best is always going to be Kahlúa. But if you don’t have it, some other great tasting coffee liqueurs are Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur or Tia Maria Liqueur.

Cola – or the best drink, yes from experience, use a can of Coca-Cola. And I say can because the 2 Liter bottles get flat too fast. And the cans always seem to have more carbon dioxide in them. And I like Coca-Cola because it’s not as sweet as Pepsi. But any cola works.

Galliano – If you don’t have any Galliano on hand, you can switch it out for Sambuca. It’ll still taste pretty close to the original recipe.

Recipe Variations

Want a better kick? Try using Ouzo for the Coffee Liqueur in the recipe. Guaranteed to give the alcohol content a boost but still staying to the taste of the shooter.

Try using Baily’s Irish Cream instead of plain coffee liqueur. The added cream gives this drink more of a root beer float taste.

And you can even make this a float if you want to get all sophisticated. Just add a tiny bit of vanilla ice cream to the bottom of the glass for a tasty surprise at the end!
