White Wine Drinks
White wine is one of those versatile drinks that can be either enjoyed straight or it can be used as a mixer as well. So it’s no wonder there are now so many different white wine drink recipes floating around as they often make a lighter and more full bodied drink than heavier alcohols.
Classic White Wine Spritzer
Undoubtedly the best known white wine cocktail, the spritzer is a light and summery although it can be enjoyed anytime of the year. You’ll see these cocktails at brunches and even weddings.
To make a great white wine spritzer use a fruitier wine that’s somewhat dry. Then mix three parts wine and one part club soda water or even something like 7up if you want to experiment a little.
Pre chill your wine glass and make sure all of the ingredients are as cold as possible. This is meant to be a refreshing lighter drink, and the cold brings out the flavors of the wine and mixer. And as far as serving, a frosty glass makes for great presentation.
Although this drink doesn’t need a garnish, Martha Stewart recommends garnishing with scooped melon balls but you can also use fresh berries or a simple lemon wedge.
Blanc Cassis
This simple two ingredient drink is not only tasty, but it really looks impressive with its bright red coloring which comes from the blackcurrants found in the Creme de Cassis.
Blanc Cassis takes its name from ‘Blanc” meaning white or made from white, and ‘Cassis’ from the Creme de Cassis. Together they pair well as the Creme de Cassis has a slight grape flavor and is tart enough to cut the sweetness in even cheaper white wines and allowing those of you who think white wine is too sweet to enjoy this drink.
Raspberry White Sangria
Think sangria and you’d almost certainly reach for a red rather than a white wine, but it is possible to make a white sangria work beautifully as long as you use good fresh fruit. Raspberries are best as they crush easily and release a gorgeous flavor. They also give the finished product a pleasing pink tinge.
Sangria is basically a white wine spritzer with a bit of fruit for more flavor. You again using white wine and club soda at around the same ratio of three parts wine to one part soda, then add a quarter cup of brandy as a sweetener. Be careful here, as too much brandy along with the fruit can easily make this way too sweet and hide the flavor of the wine.
Hot Springs Cocktail
This white wine drink is a little heavier on the alcohol and definitely more of an evening drink. Take an ounce and a half of any white wine, add a half an ounce of pineapple juice, just a splash of maraschino liqueur (half a teaspoon will do fine), and the tiniest hint orange bitters.
Combine all of the ingredients together with ice in a cocktail shaker, strain out the ice and serve. Unlike most white wine cocktails, this one isn’t so cooling and can be drunk all year round. I like to garnish this with a maraschino cherry. But a garnish isn’t required.
Captain with a Skirt
Named after the Captain Morgan rum, this is no spritzer. The recipe calls for two ounces of rum and is more a twist on a rum and coke than a white wine drink.
To make this drink, grab a taller beverage type of glass or a highball glass and fill with ice. Add the two ounces of Captain Morgan rum, two ounces of your favorite white wine, then top off with Coca-Cola. Garnish with a lime wedge and serve.
This one makes an interesting variation on a very common combination and is definitely one to try out on friends that always order the same old rum and coke. You never know, it might encourage them to try a few more of your creations.
Scropino
This one is for the citus lover. Luxurious and very delicious, this is more like a dessert than a cocktail. And to make this correctly, use a sparkling wine or better yet, use Prosecco as is traditionally used.
You’ll need a tub of lemon gelato (one generous scoop per glass), one and a half ounces of limoncello per glass, the same amount of a smooth citrus vodka, and a bottle of white.
Take all ingredients except for the wine and blend at high speed in a food processor or margarita blender. Divide between the glasses and top each one up with wine. You can finish with a lemon wedge or with a leaf of mint or let this lovely drink speak for itself. Serve immediately so that the gelato is still icy cold.
And that’s it for our quick list of some yummy white wine cocktails. I you have a recipe you’d like to add, let us know! We’d love to include them.
